About the Academy
Flute & Friends Suzuki Music Academy is a warm and welcoming Suzuki music community of 17 years. Located in the heart of University City, access to center city is available by 34 trolley that stops right outside our door!
Founded in 2000 by Jennifer Janson, a passionate flute teacher and music therapist, the Academy embodies the principles of the Suzuki Philosophy through a strong, supportive community within a joyful, child-centered environment!
Flute & Friends begins students from birth-30 months through our “Baby Suzuki” program, and accepts students into Suzuki flute program by the age 3+ (earlier on a case by case basis). Adults and students with special needs are also welcome!

Jennifer Janson is passionate flute teacher of 20 years, and specializes in early childhood development & pedagogy. Currently, Jennifer is owner & director of Flute & Friends Suzuki Music Academy in University City and the former Flute Teaching Artist for Play On Philly. Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Delaware and Hahnemann/Drexel University, from which she holds both a Bachelor’s degree in flute performance and a Master’s degree in Music Therapy. Jennifer has been a long time student of Kazuo Tokito (Philadelphia Orchestra), Eileen Grycky (Delaware Symphony) and also Jan Boland (Red Cedar Chamber Music), whom have all greatly inspired her career path as both as a performer and teacher. As a board-certified Music Therapist, Jennifer has worked with kids in adoption & foster care, along with children with special needs, including autism & learning disabilities. Jennifer also actively enjoys freelancing and performing chamber music in the Philadelphia area.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Stephanie Ashman received her BM in Flute Performance from West Chester University. She is currently a member of the Brandywine Pops Orchestra and has also played in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and West Chester University Symphony Orchestra. Stephanie is a certified Suzuki & Music Together teacher and offers early childhood music classes in Wilmington. Aside from music, Stephanie loves to paint! Contemporary and colorful, you can find her work on StephanieAshmanArt on Facebook. Stephanie is thrilled to be a part of the Flute & Friends Community! She currently teaches all new students at the Academy including the youngest age group 2.5-6 year olds, Baby Suzuki, and Music Mind Games classes.
Currently a doctoral fellow at Temple University in the studio of Charles Abramovic, pianist Gretchen Hull is a freelance recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher based in Philadelphia. Gretchen has recently given a lecture-recital on piano literature by lesser-known Norwegian composers, whose music she is performing in many venues on the East and West coasts in her 2017 winter/spring recital tour. Gretchen has given recitals for numerous series throughout the east coast including WSKG’s televised series Expressions, Classical Pianists of the Future, and the Civic Morning Musical Wedneday Recital Series at the Everson Museum of Art, to name a few. She also has been heard performing and/or been interviewed on the WCNY, WSKG, and WPEL radio stations, as well as WSKG’s television show Artist Café.
A past participant in the Chautauqua Piano Program and the International Keyboard Institute and Festival, she has most recently been a semifinalist in the PIANALE International Piano Academy and Competition in Schlitz, Germany. Gretchen Hull received her master’s degree at Temple University and her undergraduate degree from Houghton College, where she studied under Fleisher student William Newbrough.
