Have you or your child been experiencing a “summer slide”? Has your child been losing some of their musical progress over the summer? This often happens during summer breaks, when we’ve booked our calendars with camps, vacations, and events, and practicing takes a backseat. This is a normal occurrence, but especially so during this summer as we are emerging from quarantine to enjoy the warm weather and time with our families.

If this “summer sliding” is normal, how do we avoid feeling guilty about not practicing, and avoid hitting a mental block and frustration when we do get back to our regular practicing? Try prioritizing fun playing, and incorporate music into your summer activities! For example, bring your instrument with you on vacation if possible, and just practice for ten minutes when you can. You could also practice some blue jellos or rhythms in the car, or sing along to a Suzuki song CD. Have a lovely time enjoying the sun!
